Looking at a
number of my portraits grouped together
like this makes me realize how many I
have actually done, and how different
each one is from the last. The ability to
see clearly, and to process what we see
so that it comes out looking anything
like the subject is not only a human
gift, but a reflection of how we perceive
the world. The little boy in the
overalls, for example, was painted during
a period in my life when I had a serious
illness, and had to take high levels of
prednisone every day. The drug had a way
of distorting things to such a degree
that the portrait almost has the look of
a caricature. But for that reason, it is
one of my favorites.
Not all of my
portraits have been photographed, but the
12 above are good examples of those I
have done over the past 25 years.
